Here is a basement family room redesign that involved removing the 70's 'tiki bar' and plaid wallpaper from one of the corners of the room.
Inexpensive chair rail molding was added to the walls in order to paint the upper portion a light crème color which continued onto the ceiling. This helps to give this room a sense of height and spaciousness. With the addition of an area rug, and furniture and accessories 'shopped' from other areas of the home, the result is dramatic. It is now a room that the family can comfortably relax and entertain in without feeling they are in an underground cave.
